The RD originally opened in 1974 as "The RD Club," a private business luncheon club located at 28 State Street. Within a few years, the dining room was opened to the public during dinner hours, under the name "The RD Room." In 1978, The RD Room was moved to its current location at 60 State Street. In 1996, new function space was added and the entire organization was renamed "RD Fine Foods & Wines," to reflect a larger scope of operations than a single "room."
